BGLX brought the magical Spiegeltent to life for Christmas in Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle
Hosting spectacular Christmas parties is the speciality of the team behind the infamous Bristol Spiegeltent. This Christmas they brought their wild and glamourous nights to the heart of Liverpool’s creative district at Cains Brewery Village. BGLX was offered the opportunity to provide Lighting for Spiegeltent Liverpool.
What is the Spiegeltent?!
“Spiegeltent translates as ‘mirror tent’ and they were created in the Flemish Region of Belgium in the late 19th century. Spiegeltents are hand-hewn pavilions known for their wild and decadent ambiance and used for travelling dance halls, bars and bohemian entertainment salons. The magnificent round tent is made of dark wood with intricately carved panels, stained glass windows, bevelled mirrors and an impressive draped ceiling. Its innate beauty and romance makes it a truly extraordinary venue for any event. Our Spiegeltent continues this fine tradition with an exquisitely decorated performance space that is ideally suited to Christmas parties, masquerade balls, live music shindigs and food filled festive soirees.” Taken from their website.
What Lighting for Spiegeltent Liverpool did we do?
We spent 2 days installing all the internal and external lighting for this unique immersive experience. It ran for 3 weeks in the build up to Christmas 2019. One of our lighting engineers, Rick, who has over 15 years industry experience, was on site throughout to manage lighting for all of the performances. This included late night entertainment from the house band and DJs playing into the early hours.
Highlighting the architecture
Our brief was to showcase the unique architecture of the Spiegeltent. We did this internally with a selection of our new Chauvet Rogue R3 300W LED Spots. These are brand new and extend our hire stock for the upcoming event season. We also installed a ring of Martin Rush Par 1 LED Par Cans and awesome ADJ 32 Hex Bar IPs. This kept an exhilarating atmosphere going all night full of lighting patterns and interesting designs.
Externally we installed Warm White festoon to help guide people in towards the event space. The space then contained more ADJ 32 Hex Bar IPs to set the scene for the night ahead. As the guests entered the tent, they were struck with the impressive design and enchanting architecture of the Spieglet which was perfectly highlighted by the intricate lighting design.
Running the show
The evening’s entertainment centred around a stage which we lit up using a selection of Robe Robin 150 LED Beams, Showtec Active Sunstrips and Chauvet EVE F50Z LED Compact Fresnels in Warm White. Rick controlled this using the Chamsys MQ80 and utilizing City Theatrical Show baby’s wireless DMX modules, that meant we didn’t need to run lines everywhere keeping the set up nice and neat.
Back of house areas matter too
In addition to the public areas, we installed a load of floodlighting for the back of house area, this gave the event management team a great area behind the scenes to keep the events running smoothly.
Production manager Francis says: “This was a great opportunity to light an exciting project in our home town and bring a new attraction to life. The events ranged from musicals and bands to cabarets, giving us a great chance to utilise our new lighting and increased stock to showcase the incredible performances taking place.”
